We’ve become pretty good at thinking of nature as something around us. Ekatra is an attempt to look a little closer.

It is a living, open-source repository of our plants, trees and ecology, bringing together knowledge that is often scattered across books, neighbourhoods, memories and people.

But ecology is more than names, photographs and facts. It lives in the stories we inherit, the plants we recognise, the places we remember and the relationships we build with the living world around us. Ekatra brings this knowledge together, shaped not just by experts, but by the communities who live alongside it.

Features

A Warli painting in white on an ochre ground: a dense field of small leaves covering the whole surface, with leaf-shaped openings cut into it holding fish, crabs, birds, cattle, a pig, a butterfly, people, and a plot of standing crops. Two figures carrying baskets stand on a rise at the top left; a single round tree stands at the top centre. Kansari Story A gulmohar flower, dried and pressed flat, its petals gone translucent and veined deep red against white. The Gulmohar We Think We Know Essay The cover of Amdavad-ma, a magazine of ideas and concerns: a black-and-white woodcut of cyclists and shopfronts below new high-rise blocks, under a red hand-drawn masthead.
