Amrutjal - The Ultimate Zero-Cost Organic Fertilizer

Words by Mehar Pandya Images by Nishkant Jain

If you are looking for a completely organic, low-cost liquid fertilizer that nourishes plants while dramatically improving soil structure, Amrutjal is the answer.

Amrutjal is an ancient, fermented microbial brew made from cow dung, gaumutra (cow urine), and organic jaggery. It acts as a soil nutrient, foliar spray, pest deterrent, and seed-soaking solution.

How to Make Amrutjal at Home

Ingredients:
1 kg fresh cow dung
1 liter Gaumutra (cow urine)
100 grams organic jaggery
1 handful of soil from under a healthy Banyan or Peepal tree
10 liters of water (use a plastic bucket or drum)

Instructions:
1. In a 10-liter plastic bucket, dissolve the jaggery completely in water.
2. Mix in the cow dung, Gaumutra, and soil using a clean wooden or plastic stick.
3. Top up with water, leaving a few inches at the top, and cover loosely with a cloth or plastic tray.
4. Stir daily: Gently stir the liquid 12 times clockwise and 12 times counter-clockwise, 3 times a day.
5. Ferment: Let it ferment for 4 days. Microbial activity reaches its peak on the fourth day.

How to Use It

Soil Drench: Dilute 1 liter of concentrated Amrutjal with 10 liters of fresh water. Apply this diluted mixture once a week during regular watering.
Foliar Spray: Filter the diluted liquid through a fine cloth and spray onto foliage weekly to boost plant immunity and discourage pests.

Long-term use of Amrutjal softens compact dirt, boosts water retention, improves rainwater percolation, and keeps your soil ecosystem thriving.
