Essay Edition One,

Start With Soil

Words by Vanshi Shukla Images by Lottie Bea Spencer

When we think about planting, we usually start with the plant.
Which tree should we choose?
What will flower well?
What looks good here?

But the better place to start is the soil.

Soil is not just something that holds a plant upright. It stores water, supplies nutrients, anchors roots and supports fungi, bacteria, insects and countless other organisms that keep an ecosystem working. A single teaspoon of healthy soil can contain more microorganisms than there are people on Earth, and around 95% of the food we eat depends on soil in some way. That makes knowing your soil more important than it may seem.

Ahmedabad and the surrounding district have different soil types, including Goradu sandy loams, fertile brown soils, black soils, Kyari soils and saline patches. Each behaves differently. Some soils drain water quickly. Some hold moisture for longer. Some suit particular plants naturally, while others make those same plants dependent on frequent watering, fertilisers or constant care.

So instead of asking only: What do I want to plant?
It helps to ask: What will actually thrive here?

Knowing the soil helps us choose plants that are better suited to the place. That can mean stronger roots, healthier plants, less water, fewer inputs and a landscape that works more naturally with the insects, fungi, pollinators and birds around it.

Good planting does not begin at the nursery. It begins with understanding the ground you already have.

Know your soil first. Everything else grows from there.
