  • Potting mix: prepare a manure-rich, sandy, porous soil, water well, and level it.
  • Ratio: soil : compost : dry leaves : sand = 30:30:30:10.
  • To plant, first make sweet potato slips.
  • Partly dip a mature sweet potato in a mug of water and keep it in a sunny spot, letting small shoots and roots grow.
  • Separate the shoots and partly dip each in a mug of water for roots to develop, then separate the baby plants and plant them in the prepared soil.
  • This whole process takes 3-4 weeks.
  • Sowing period: May-June.
  • Sowing method: 1-2 slips in an 18-20 inch (diameter) by 18 inch (height) grow bag, with 6-8 hours of sunlight.
  • It can also be grown in a raised garden bed.
  • Harvest period: sweet potato may take 2 seasons to fully form.

Traditionally harvested around Maha Shivratri.

  • The tender leaves are edible and make a genuinely delicious raita.
